Plastic Pirates – Go Blue Schools!
Date of Publication:

In March, the Plastic Pirates had the privilege of showcasing their project to 15 enthusiastic educators from the EU and neighboring countries during the Science Project Online Workshops (SPOWs) organized by the Network of European Blue Schools. The workshop's primary aim was to explain how the Plastic Pirates initiative seamlessly integrates into the Blue School framework.

Go Blue Schools!

The Network of European Blue Schools is committed to empowering schools and educators as drivers of change in ocean conservation, nurturing a new generation of informed, responsible, and engaged citizens with Ocean Literacy. Through project-based learning, the objective of the network of European Blue Schools is to ensure that the ocean becomes an integral part of children's educational experiences. Key values of these projects include student ownership, collaborations with other organizations, and fostering a community of individuals passionate about the ocean. Schools that successfully complete the “Find the Blue challenge” will be awarded European Blue School certification.

During the workshop, educators, NGOs, and the Plastic Pirates engaged in fruitful discussions on how citizen science and the Plastic Pirates initiative can further the goals of the Blue Schools network. A shared concern among participants was the urgent need to address plastic pollution, particularly microplastics, within their educational settings.

The Network of European Blue Schools is an initiative supported by the European Commission, facilitated by DG MARE, and developed in collaboration with the EU4Ocean Coalition partners.
