“Plastic Pirates – Go Europe!” is a large-scale citizen science initiative aimed at tackling plastic waste pollution in rivers, waterways, and coastlines across Europe. Since June 2022, the project has expanded to 13 European countries, engaging more than 16,000 students who have sampled over 350 rivers and coasts. In our “Lessons-Learned from upscaling a citizen science initiative across Europe” we share our success factors and 12 lessons learned.

With these materials, teachers and group leaders of extracurricular youth groups can prepare themselves for the Plastic Pirates – Go Europe! campaign. The document contains background information and master copies and offers all relevant information for support and follow-up.
The material can be used independently of a river expedition and beyond the campaign period.
