The action "Plastic Pirates – Go Europe!" contributes to research on the spread of macro- and microplastics in and along European rivers. The project allows people interested in science to get directly involved in the research process.

§1 Participation

To participate in the campaign, data must be collected and photographs taken within the corresponding sampling campaign period. The collected data and photos from a spring census period must be posted annually by July 15 and from a fall census period by November 30 to the website plastic-pirates.eu/en/results/data-upload (or other language versions). Contributions submitted later may not be considered for the study.

§2 Copyright and personal rights/right of use of the organiser

By agreeing to the conditions of participation, the participants - as individuals and as a group - declare their consent to the exclusive, spatially and temporally unlimited use of the data entered and the uploaded photos.

This exclusive, spatially and temporally unlimited right of use granted to the organiser includes, among other things, the publication of the uploaded data and photos on the website plastic-pirates.eu, the Facebook profiles, Instagram profiles and Twitter accounts of the Plastic Pirates as well as the project partners. The right of use includes the right to pass on and process the collected research data for research purposes as well as publication by interested media representatives and partners of the research focus.

In addition, the organiser is authorised to use the uploaded data and photos in the context of further (photo) documentation and on the website of the DLR Project Management Agency, in future printed publications, either in whole or in part. In addition, the organiser is authorised to use the images without any restrictions in terms of time and space in the context of reporting and press work within the scope of the research focus and to pass them on to interested media representatives for the purpose of reporting.

By uploading the data and photos, the sender of the completed participation form confirms his/her right to represent the uploaded photos. This means that he/she must ensure in advance, if necessary, vis-à-vis third parties who have been involved in the collection of the data that they agree to participate in the campaign.

By taking part in the campaign and uploading the data and photos, the participating groups (and this also applies to all individual members of the groups) declare that any visual material used is free of third-party rights.

It is also confirmed that all persons shown in the photos agree to the publication and, in the case of minors, that a declaration of consent from their legal guardians has been obtained. In addition, uploading the data and photos confirms that the organiser and the DLR Project Management Agency are exempt from legal claims by third parties with regard to the uploaded data and photos.

§3 Data protection

In order to successfully upload the data, each group gives itself its own distinctive name, preferably not "Plastic Pirates". Visitors to the website can use this group name to find all uploaded data and photos of the group.

The collection of personal data is necessary for the evaluation of the individual participation forms. The following data is collected: group name, name of contact person, organisation/institution/school, postal address and e-mail address of the contact person. The name of the group, the name of the contact person, the name of the organisation/institution/school and the location may be published by the organiser within the overview of data on the map. All other personal data will not be passed on to third parties, but will only be used to carry out the event (see chap. 4 of the privacy policy). The organiser may also inform the participants by e-mail after the counting period about the results or about further actions of the Plastic Pirates.

By agreeing to the conditions of participation, participants - as individuals and as a group - give their consent to the publication of the uploaded photos on the campaign website. It is also confirmed that all persons shown in the photos agree to the publication and, in the case of minors, that the consent of their legal guardians has been obtained.

§4 Exclusion from participation

Should the organiser become aware that participants have carried out actions for the purpose of or during the production of their action contribution which violate the private law of third parties, fulfil a criminal offence within the meaning of the German Criminal Code (StGB) or have in any other way restricted, restrict or will in future restrict public safety and order or a coexistence characterised by tolerance and diversity, the organiser reserves the right to examine the contribution in question and, if necessary, to exclude it from participation.

§5 Technical framework conditions

Each photo submitted may not exceed a file size of 2 MB and should be in landscape format at best. In addition, the photos should be uploaded in .JPG format.

§6 Final legal provisions

In principle, the organiser accepts no liability for the loss or incompleteness of data transmitted by participants, unless the loss or incompleteness of the data is due to deliberate or grossly negligent behaviour on the part of the organiser or his employees. This also applies to the disclosure of information by third parties due to technical errors in data transmission and/or unauthorised access.

Should individual provisions of these terms and conditions of participation be invalid or unenforceable in whole or in part or lose their legal validity or enforceability at a later date, this shall not affect the validity of the remaining provisions.

§7 Legal action

Recourse to legal action is excluded.
